AES and NAB New York 2018 Recap

October 26, 2018

Recap of the 145th AES Convention and NAB Show New York.

Throngs of media professionals and enthusiasts convened in our hometown of New York City this month, attending the co-located NAB New York Show and the 145th AES Convention at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The attendance was massive - AES recorded nearly 14,000 registrations and NAB notched over 15,000 (attendees could access both halls with either show's badge).

The shows featured hundreds of exhibitors, plenty of workshops, keynote speeches by Thomas Dolby (for AES) and Robert DeNiro (for NAB), and gear galore. They combined to offer a definitive experience for people in media creation and delivery, recording, broadcast, TV, post-production, virtual and augmented reality, networked audio, and so much more.

In the middle of all of this was Dale Pro Audio. We proudly occupied a centrally-located booth staffed by our team of Sales Professionals, demonstrated our company's experience and know-how, displayed some examples of the gear we sell, and also promoted our new Dale RF Solutions Group. In addition, our team combed the halls for the latest and greatest technologies in these exciting industries.

Some of the highlights we uncovered on the show floor:

  • Universal Audio is now shipping their Apollo X series of interfaces. Our first shipment that arrived just prior to the show is already moving quickly!
  • Sanken released a new Chromatic Series mic - the CS-M1 shotgun. It's super short, only weighs about 4 ounces, and is ideal for all kind of ENG jobs.
  • Zoom introduced a 360-degree audio recorder called the H3-VR, which can handle several different immersive formats.
  • Lectrosonics showed a new portable digital recorder called the SPDR, intended for location recording in a durable unit.
  • Sound Devices is releasing a new 3.0 firmware for the MixPre series, adding support for third-party control surfaces and direct support for ambisonics mics such as the Sennheiser AMBEO.
  • iZotope's industry standard RX 7 audio repair software is now available, a must-have for studios, post houses, and broadcast edit suites.
  • Waves released the new Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain plugin - get that "classic studio" sound in your DAW!
  • Solid State Logic had a huge buzz at their booth with the new Fusion analog coloration buss processor.
  • Antelope Audio expanded their Edge family of modeling microphones, now with the Solo, Duo, and Quadro.
  • Linear Acoustic introduced a new stereo broadcast loudness processor called ARC.
  • Genelec brought out two new models for high-SPL monitoring in music or post facilities - the S360 Main Monitor and the 7382A Active Subwoofer.
  • NUGEN Audio now added Netflix standards as presets into their Loudness Toolkit 2 plugin suite, making digital delivery easy as ever.
  • Sennheiser for the first time is offering an Evolution Wireless System with a Neumann capsule (previously only available in their top-tier series).

We took the time at this show to promote our new RF Solutions Group - a nationwide team of RF specialists to help solve your wireless challenges. Whether it's wireless mics, intercom systems, video, telemetry, IFB, or large scale RF distribution, Dale RF Solutions Group can optimize your RF future.

It was also nice to see some of our long-time partners celebrating big milestones: Neumann with an astounding 90 years in business, Clear-Com continued their 50th anniversaryDan Dugan Sound Design turned 50 as well, and Lynx Studio Technologies and Sound Devices reached 20.

Technology Development Manager Joel Guilbert was impressed with what these combined shows offered: "We were happy to exhibit at the AES show this year - catching up with generations of happy Dale customers is a great experience. The IP showcase and presentation area was buzzing throughout the whole show, with interest in IP solutions at an all-time high."
