As part of their ongoing "Get Closer To The Power Of Live" campaign, DPA Microphones teamed up with Dale Pro Audio, Yamaha, and D.W. Fearn to present an evening with jazz/Americana saxophonist Bill Evans. Joined by the Hazelrigg Brothers as a rhythm section, the sold-out event covered various techniques and practices, all while featuring some world-class gear.
MC'd by DPA's Business Development Manager Gabriel Antonini, the evening-long workshop involved many different topics regarding mic placement, mic techniques, all with side by side comparisons. The results were recorded by engineer Paul Andrews and played back to the attendees for review. Also on hand was DPA's Vice President of Sales and Marketing Christopher Spahr, further fielding questions and showing off some of the company's latest innovations. Representing D.W. Fearn was Douglas Fearn himself, with all of DPA's microphones going through his acclaimed preamps.
Representing Dale were Sales Professionals Dan Ross and Michael Yorky, Product Specialist John DiMaggio, and Director of Marketing/Brand Development Eric Eldredge.
After a few examples, the Hazelrigg Brothers Trio came out and played a little bit for some further demonstrations, allowing Antonini to offer some side by side comparisons mic'ing their piano and upright bass, then John O'Reilly's drum set. Then, the main event got underway, when the sax legend himself came to the stage. Evans offered a few words about his experiences using microphones on his saxes, and showing off a few mic'ing techniques, and then the four musicians got to play a few tunes, ending the procedings with some incredible jazz performances.
The event was graciously hosted by Yamaha at their Artist Services salon in midtown Manhattan. The luxurious space features some of their finest acoustic pianos and is equipped with a Nuage recording console and Steinberg Nuendo system, which were also on display to attendees. Yamaha also catered the event, serving drinks and hors d'oevures throughout the night.
Bill Evans is a world-class saxophonist and producer who made his debut on the international music scene in the 1980s originally with Miles Davis, (at the age of 21 years old and recorded 6 records with Davis) which led to playing with the likes of John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Mick Jagger and Willie Nelson to name a few. With 24 solo albums, Grammy nods, and countless collaborations and tours, Evans has continued to explore a dazzling variety of adventurous musical settings as a pioneering bandleader, consistently winning fans in the worldwide arena.
George and Geoff Hazelrigg are multi-talented brothers and highly accomplished musicians. Bassist, Geoff, pianist, George, and joined by drummer John O’Reilly, Jr., the trio presents an ingenious blend of classical, rock, and jazz elements. Their repertoire ranges from Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, to baroque and 20th century classical music. They have most recently recorded with genre bending artists Autre Ne Veut and Shy Girls.
