In the world of audio and technology, things change. It's not only technology that evolves, however - new faces are always emerging, entering the ranks of engineers, producers, and techs. We recently took up an invitation to appear at the Manhattan campus of SAE Institute New York to introduce ourselves to some of these up and coming audio pros and offer some advice and technical know-how.
In a spirited meeting with some of the incoming students, members of our team gave these future audio professionals some tips on tech, reflected on the industry's expectations, and inspired them how to approach the outset of their careers. We also introduced them to Dale Pro Audio's benefits and history, letting them know what we're all about.
Live Sound and Install Sales Professional Darryl Terry (at left) is himself an SAE Institute alumnus, so he was able to recount his own experiences on campus, and used some of them to offer some relatable advice to the students. Adding in his lengthy history in the world of live sound, DJ, audio for worship, and consumer audio, he stressed the importance of building up a backbone of theory and understanding of audio, above and beyond gear. This will allow one to apply practical knowledge to situations, and to operate different types of gear without starting from scratch.
Recording Sales and Support Specialist Alex Guerra (at right) spoke about some of his real-world studio experience, and chronicled the rise of Pro Tools as the industry standard for multitrack recording, mixing, and beyond. He stressed the need for young aspiring pros to put ego aside, and keep an open mind when looking for ways to break into the audio workforce. He joined Terry in reminding the students that not all audio jobs are music-based and that other areas of work can only serve to strengthen one's knowledge and resume.
To wrap up the session, Marketing Director Eric Eldredge and Executive Assistant Tamara Vega went on to give an overview of the company, some of our history, some of what services we offer, and some SAE Institute-specific partnership programs we will be enacting in the near future.
The successful afternoon meeting saw an attendance of nearly 100 students, many of whom walked away with some great tidbits of info (and a few swag goodies too).
SAE Institute opened its first New York campus in 1999, moving to its new location in Manhattan's Chelsea section in 2013. In a desire to maintain as much hands-on training as possible (to complement classroom sessions), the facilities are stocked with an incredible array of gear and are built to mimic a real-world studio in both form and function. Consoles include an SSL 4000G+, Neve 88R, and Avid ICON, all the outboard processors you could imagine, and a full line of software workstations for students to learn every major DAW application.
Career Services Manager Courtney Woodward was the person behind inviting us for the afternoon: "We were so pleased to have the Dale team here for the day. It was wonderful to have Terry attend and share his experience as an SAE Graduate and Dale Pro employee with our current students. The presentations left our students energized and excited."
She remains as excited for the future as we are: "We are excited to be able to work closely with Dale Pro Audio to help our students and graduates work toward their career goals. Over the years Dale has been a valued partner of SAE Institute New York and we look forward to building an even stronger relationship moving forward."
