Originally developed by API in the late 1960s as a way to customize the tone-shaping options on their consoles, the 500 Series was opened up to third-party brands in 2006 with the creation of the VPR Alliance. The results were nothing short of staggering, as you can now put nearly any kind of outboard processor into a small footprint.

Engineers can now load up a portable 500 Series frame as a "lunchbox" with their favorite preamps and signal processors and take it to any studio they like, or record on the go.
